Darkness

Darkness, evil, suffering, the unknown. The word darkness can mean a lot of things, all of which refer to something wicked. In star wars the Dark Side is the bad side, the side of evilness. Darkness falls, a movie about an evil tooth fairy that can only kill you if you are in the darkness. In almost all the old black and white scary movies, the scary creatures and monsters come out during the night when it is dark. The Vampire hides from light under his black cape. The Werewolf howls at the moon during the middle of the night. When the only light is the light of the moon. In fact, most of the movie takes place at night, when the characters are up late. And the parts during the day are often skipped over. The only real source of light is the moon, which is often half covered by clouds. So what is it about the dark that is so scary? Mostly it is the fact that you can’t see, and for most, seeing is believing. It is the fact that you don’t know for sure what is out there. And you are left to wonder. Men fear what they cannot see and control. You cannot control what lurks in the dark with out knowing what it is. The dark side of the force is the unknown side of the force. And when sought after, only suffering can come from it. Heck has often been referred to as Outer Darkness. A place of misery and endless woe. So with all this evil and death relating to darkness, it’s no wonder that every kid you meet is afraid of the dark. I’m still freaked out when I have to go down into my grandma’s basement alone. Because when I was younger, my uncles would flip the lights of and then pop out wearing the latest scary mask they had gotten. I still keep an eye on the light switch the few times I go down there.
The bad guys in movies are always dressed in dark clothing. Darth Mal the evil sith apprentice, dresses in black, Darth Vader, black. The sith, black. And sometimes the darker clothes you wear, the darker you become.
Darkness is where the monsters lurk, in your dirty dark closet, under your bed concealed in the darkness of all your junk. But the moment the light is turned on and the closet opened, monsters are just a figment of your imagination, of course they are not there. They only come out in the dark, with those big glowing green eyes. Maybe that is why so many kids have night lights these days. To scare the evil darkness dwelling monsters out of your closet, or out from under your bed. Maybe to scare them into your sisters room or something.
Everyone gets afraid when they are left all alone in the dark. No matter how old you are you get that little jitter when you think of what could be out there, where you can’t see it. So my advice, stay in the light.
