Revenge

Revenge. What a great word, don’t you think? Wouldn’t it be great if you could get revenge on anyone you want to? What is so great about revenge? I mean, there are hundreds of thousands of stories of revenge, and in almost every one, the person seeking revenge ends up worse than they are.
Recently I was showed a few clips of Shakespear. Take the play Hamlet for example. There is a queen and a king who have a son named Hamlet. The kings brother poisons the king with the help of the queen to take over the kingdom. Well the king dies and the queen and uncle get married. Hamlet is deeply troubled by his fathers death. One night he is visited by his fathers ghost. The ghost then tells him about his murder, and all that the queen and uncle did. The ghost then asks him to avenge his death. Hamlet then sets out to avenge his father. In his craze for revenge, he slams his girl friend, she then kills herself because she loved him, and apparently he didn’t love her anymore. Then somewhere in the story, Hamlet accidentally kills his best friends father, who is also the father of his girlfriend, while his friend is away. Which gets his friend all fired up to get revenge on Hamlet. Well, in the end Hamlet and his "friend" have a duel of sport. Just for fun. Well, his friend decides this is the time to seek revenge on Hamlet so he poisons the blade of the sword so the tiniest scratch will kill him. Without knowing this, the uncle, knowing Hamlet is on to him, puts poison in a mug that will go to the winner, to kill Hamlet as well. The match begins, the queen drinks the poison from the mug on accident, and dies, Hamlet gets mad that the uncle poisoned her as well, kills the uncle, then is killed by his friend in the sword fight.
Now isn’t that the perfect example of how revenge makes one happy? I mean, sure the uncle should have been put to justice, but that isn’t really revenge. Instead, he ends up getting everyone killed, including himself, and the story ends with all the main characters dead.
Another story of revenge is in the book I am reading. This boys dad is shot in the back, the boy hears of his fathers fate and thinks he is dead. Then the people who shot his father, burned his house down. They flee from the town, and the boy takes a hundred and fifty dollars, and tries to go after the two men that are doing all this to him. He buys himself a pistol and goes looking for them. A bud of the two men find out and tricks him into getting caught. So he is taken to the old warehouse where the two men are hiding. They take his pistol and are mocking him, when he slugs one of the two guys in the nose. The guy then grabs a pistol and is about to kill the kid when the friend of the two guys, steps in the way with the boys pistol. He ends up shooting the guy who wanted to kill the boy in the chest, so he dies. The other guy grabs is buddy’s pistol then is shot as well. The friend then sees what he has done, and takes the boy and flees the town. Holding the boy captive.
Now isn’t that a pleasant story. Everything just seems to work out doesn’t it? Why do people get all hyped up about getting revenge when in the end they know it won’t work out, and they will be probably worse off then they are before they got their revenge. Revenge is a practice that brings death; and if used properly, the end of the world.

Try Your Best And Perish

I once read a story by Mark Twain. A very smart and intelligent man. Now I don’t remember all the details. It was quite a while ago, but I will do my best to tell it according to the story.
Once upon a time there was a little boy, now this little boy was the most perfect little boy you would ever meet. He always obeyed his parents, no matter what kind of thing he was asked. He was always sharing and kind to his siblings. His main goal in life was to be in a church book. Now what that means is that he would often read or hear stories in church about good children, and he wanted to be like them. His only problem was, all those people were dead. But he thought if he just tried a little harder, he would be written about before he died. The sad part is, when ever he tried to do good, bad came of it. For example, while walking the street one day he came upon a blind man and a group of "bad kids." The "bad kids" had kicked the blind man’s walking stick out from underneath him, and he fell to the ground. Being the good child he was, the little boy rushed to help the blind man up, but upon doing so the blind man started smacking him repeatedly over the head with his cane. A little later, he came upon the "bad boys" sailing boats on a Sunday. Now he knew that it wasn’t right to sail boats on Sunday. So he went over to tell the other boys to stop, when he tripped on a log, fell in and almost drowned. But this did not dampen his spirits. No matter what, he would always do his best. Another day came, he was walking through the woods when he came upon a clearing, in the clearing were a group of "bad boys" He walked into the clearing knowing they couldn’t possibly be up to any good. When he arrived in the clearing, he saw they had a dog tied up to a bunch of can explosives of some sort. He immediately went to untie the poor dog, when one of the other boys gave him a huge kick in the rear, up he flew into the sky and exploded. It was later reported that parts of his body were found in nearby towns. He never was put into a church book, though he would never know anyway. Thus perished the little boy who always did his best.
This is a story from a book on Mark Twain, but it has been a while so forgive me if some of the details are a little off, and I assure you some are. Anyways, Mark Twain was a brilliant guy, you can’t deny it. Sometimes your best just isn’t good enough. So why try? I mean ultimately you will fail. I guess it’s just one of those things like, why live? You will eventually die anyways. I mean why do anything, why not just sit and do nothing? huh?huh? The world will come to an end anyway.

Cruel And Unusual Punishment

Throughout history, man has shown infinite creativity in his ability to inflict pain on his fellow man. Many cruel, and unusual punishments have been thought up by probably some of the most twisted minds of man. For instance, the Brazen Bull. This device was invented by an Athenian man by the name of Perillos, a brass-founder. He introduced it his idea to Phalaris, a tyrant. What he designed was a hollow pure brass bull with a door in the side. They would stick the victim inside and lock the door. Then a fire would be lit beneath it, the brass would then become red hot, roasting the person inside alive. The head was a special design with tubes and horns so that when the victim screamed, to the people on the outside it would sound like the mown of an bull. It was said that when the door was opened the bones of the people burned shown like jewels and were made into bracelets. Perillos, the inventor, was chosen by the tyrant to test the head, to see how it sounded. He crawled in and the door was locked and a fire quickly lit. However, before he died the door was opened and he was taken out. The tyrant then had him thrown off a cliff.
Not all of this torture, and cruelty happened in the dark ages either. Think of Hitler, And World War II, there is some pretty gruesome things that happen in there as well, gas chambers, just starving to death would be horrible. As technology increases, so does the tools of death. Although I think that a machine gun would have been a welcome sight to those who about to be roasted alive in a hallow cow. I would personally rather be shot. I feel pity for those who were blamed for being witches in the dark ages, all that was needed was an accusation and they were burned at the stake. I heard of one story where the Spanish captured a man and they planned on killing him by sticking a stake in the ground. Then they would hold him over it, and shove him down stabbing him right through like a shish kabob. The funny thing was. He fought off all the men and finally ended up shish kabobbing himself on accident. What kind of sick mind would come up with an idea like that. In seventh-grade I remember my teacher telling us in Utah History that when the pioneers came, they would find huge ant hills with beads on them. This was because Indians would be tied to an ant hill and slowly be eaten away by the ants. How gross is that? It is sickening when you think there are people out there that would like to sit and watch someone’s flesh burning and melting off their body, as they burn to death, or watch someone slowly bleed to death, or be eaten alive.
You may be wondering why I wrote on this topic. I am too. We look at the past and see blood, wars, and evil things. We look at the present and see suicides, murdering, war, and sickening things. What I wonder is, what do we see when we look at the future? Wars and rumors of wars, and probably the end of the world.
